Prague In The Summer – Best Activities For Summer Days

Prague is a city for all seasons. However summer travel to Prague brings warm weather, beautiful sunshine and an energetic, upbeat atmosphere to the city. Its summer days allows for an enjoyable city experience. Explore its shaded and narrow winding streets and  bask in the sunshine of its flourishing city parks. When a little sweat starts to break, nothing can beat sitting in an outdoor beer garden in the sunshine and enjoying a cold Czech beer. And in the evenings the city party’s on, with a whole range of outdoor events on offer. So for those who visiting Prague in the summer, here are a few of the best things to do and some of the best activities to enjoy when the weather is warm and the sun is shining!

1. Explore its magical back streets on foot

If you have been discovering the city’s highlights all morning, take time to explore the city’s cobbled back streets for some much needed shade and break from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. Enjoy its beautiful architecture, take a rest in a quiet square under the shade of trees or perhaps enjoy a spot of shopping from the boutique galleries and the souvenir shops.

2. Pedalos on the river

If you’ve exhausted your feet from exploring the city, take a relaxing afternoon out and view the city from a different perspective and hire a pedalo boat on the river. Admire Prague Castle, the National Theater and the famous Charles Bridge from the water. Cruise around the river’s islands and enjoy the magical views from a completely unique angle. For a slice of romance, hire a pedalo in the early evening and enjoy dusk and summer sunsets over the city with your loved one!

3. Picnic in the park

For an inexpensive, fun or romantic alternative to a sit down meal in a restaurant, indulge in the sunshine or the warmth of dusk and enjoy a picnic in one of Prague’s many park areas. For a picnic with a view head to Vysehrad Fort, just south of the city centre. Relax on its green lawns with some sliced ham, cut bread and a bottle or Moravian wine, bask over the breath-taking city views and take a stroll through the Vysehrad cemetery, a surprisingly romantic place, home to the graves of some of the Czech Republic’s most famous poets. Otherwise head to one of the gardens in Mala Strana on the west bank and enjoy river views and the company of resident swans if you’re lucky!

4. Head to the beach

When the weather warms up, there is nothing better then a day at the beach. The only problem being that the Czech Republic has no coastline, so instead we have to improvise! On the banks of the Vltava River, Prague has its very own man-made beach area called Zlute Lazne! Boasting over 200 deck chairs, a children’s playground, a volleyball sand court and a floating swimming pool its the perfect place to top up your tan or cool off from the blazing sun! They also serve one of the best mojitos I have ever had and the also put on live music in the evenings and cocktail nights.

5. Head to the Beer Gardens

Prague is home to numerous beer gardens, however its two biggest and most popular are just a short distance from the city centre. Head to Letna Beer Garden just a short walk from the city centre for amazing views over the river and city and enjoy a couple of beers with friends under the shade of trees on picnic tables. Letna Park is easily accessible from many points in the city, and the beer garden is closest to Letenské Náměstí or Strossmayerovo Náměstí tram stops. Alternatively, head into the more residential district of Prague in Vinohrady and mix with the locals in Riegrovy Sady Beer Garden. In the summer enjoy watching popular sport matches or races on the big screens and some great beer accompanying food!

6. Take a boat ride to the zoo

Prague Zoo is one of the best zoo’s in Europe and it makes for an excellent day out for families visiting the city. Make the day even more exciting and start by taking a river cruise by boat or steamer from Rašinovo Quay (nearest tram stop is Vyton) and enjoy a 75 minute boat ride, passing some of the city’s highlights on the way.

7. Embrace Summer Nights in Naplavka

Join in with the locals and enjoy summer evenings by the river in one of the many open air bars in Naplavka, a stretch of cobbled pavement that runs adjacent to the river. While it plays host to boat trips and cyclists during the day, it transforms into a hip and trendy hangout from dusk. Sample different variety’s of local beers from the various tents and bars, sit on the riverbank with friends or enjoy its myriad of music from swing to pop and join in on an impromptu dance party.

8. Cinema Under The Stars

During the summer, a whole range of outdoor cinema’s open up and offer warm summer night experiences while watching a movie. While some are in Czech, some are also in English and in the past many have played English classics. My favourite outdoor cinema is on the opposite side of the river to Naplavka in Smichov. Expect huge bean bags, deck chairs, barbecue frills and sport faculties as well as popular and recent English movies. Check out their website for updates for this years summer schedule. Riegrovy Sady also plans to host an outdoor cinema – Riegrovy Sady Outdoor Cinema 2015

9. Outdoor Festivals

Prague is a mecca for outdoor festivals during the summer. Log on to expats.cz at any given time during the summer and be bombarded with events and festivals happening in and outside the city. One of the best and not to be missed is the United Islands Festival, a unique and diverse music festival held on the city’s river islands close to the historical center.
